Flashbacks in Graphic Novel Style

Starting My Industry Animation Project

Today, I started working on my Industry Animation Proposal for my DKIT module. The project is based on a podcast about narcissism, and I had a video chat with the podcast host, who’s a wonderful woman with great ideas. During our chat, I got a creative spark and came up with a plan that’s now shaping the whole direction of the animation.

As I started developing the scenario, it hit me: Why not do the flashbacks in a graphic novel style? This idea felt perfect for showing the emotional depth of the main character’s past, while giving the animation a unique and powerful visual look. The flashbacks will be more personal and impactful, using that classic, nostalgic comic feel to really get into the character’s memories.

In the process of brainstorming this, I found an amazing artists whose work really stood out to me. Their style is heavily influenced by old-school comics, with bold lines and expressive characters that give off this raw, emotional vibe. It’s exactly what I wanted for the flashback scenes—something that looks simple but captures deep emotions.

What really inspired me, though, is the graphic novel The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui.
I love how Bui’s artwork tells such personal and emotional stories with simple yet powerful visuals. Her work influenced my decision to use a graphic novel style for the flashbacks, but I’m not aiming to copy that. Instead, I want to take inspiration from her approach and blend it with my personal love for working with watercolors and handmade techniques. I enjoy the organic feel of traditional media, and I’m excited to see how I can incorporate that into the flashbacks, creating something unique that captures the emotional depth in a more handcrafted way.

I’m excited about how this project is shaping up. It’s a blend of great podcast content, my ideas, and the graphic novel style that I think will really bring the story to life. Stay tuned for more updates as the animation develops — I can’t wait to see where it goes!
